AMG Shooting Brake confirmed for Oz
High-performance model to top the Mercedes-Benz Shooting Brake line-upMercedes-Benz is going ahead with the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake for the local market. Overnight, the prestige importer released official information on the new model, which will occupy the role of flagship in the Shooting Brake range.
As we reported yesterday, the AMG-fettled Shooting Brake will be powered by the same 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, driving through the same Speedshift MCT-7 transmission and delivering power outputs of either 368kW or — optionally — 410kW. Peak torque is rated at 700Nm in standard form or 800Nm, delivering acceleration times to 100km/h of 4.4 or 4.3 seconds, respectively. Combined-cycle fuel consumption is 10.1L/100km, in accordance with the NEDC test program.
Benz has also confirmed that the AMG version of the CLS Shooting Brake will offer the option of an American Cherry wooden floor in the luggage compartment.
David McCarthy, spokesman for the prestige importer, told motoring.com.au that the Shooting Brake will be sold in Australia, and the AMG version is one variant that will definitely come here. The new model range will arrive during the "fourth quarter", Mr McCarthy said, also declaring that "the AMG variant is a certainty". As for the other variants in the range, even Mercedes-Benz Australia is uncertain of the model mix.
"We're currently just deciding what other engine variants [to offer]," Mr McCarthy said. "I think it would be fair to muse there will be a petrol and a diesel. Which diesel? Not sure yet.
"We do have a handful of orders for the [AMG] Shooting Brake," he continued. But: "Volume's a bit hard to predict at this stage," he said, also explaining that the Shooting Brake models will be likely priced higher than the conventional CLS sedan counterparts.
"There'll be a premium over the four-door..." he acknowledged, but turned reticent when asked for more information.
However, based on the low-volume production status of the Shooting Brake, the price difference from the CLS sedan is likely to be higher again than the price difference of E-Class wagon and sedan.
