The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has awarded the 2023 Chery Tiggo 7 Pro a maximum five-star safety rating under its latest 2023-2025 testing protocols.
The new Chinese mid-size SUV was awarded 88 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per for child occupant protection, 72 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 86 per cent for Safety Assist technology.
‘Good’ results were noted across the vast majority of testing scenarios save for a ‘weak’ score recorded for the driver’s chest in the frontal offset and oblique pole tests due to the design of the restraints.
Special mention went to the Tiggo’s standard inclusion of a safety escape hammer to help occupants break the windows if the vehicle ends up being submerged and the electric controls malfunction.
“Of the nine vehicles rated by ANCAP this year, three have demonstrated window opening performance, with the Tiggo 7 Pro the first model to offer a safety escape hammer to assist with window exit,” ANCAP said in its report.
The five-star rating applies to all Tiggo 7 Pro variants currently available in Australia, and drew praise from ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.
“This broadens choice for consumers wanting to prioritise safety,” she said.
“Next year we’re expecting to see further choice for consumers with a number of new high-selling models entering the market.”
The Tiggo 7 Pro’s strong result backs up the five-star rating awarded to the smaller Chery Omoda 5 earlier this year against the previous 2020-2022 protocols.
