The Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) has awarded the latest Lexus RX five stars for crash safety, extrapolating the result from crash testing undertaken by ANCAP's European partner, Euro NCAP.
In Europe, the RX achieved an adult occupant protection result of 91 per cent, versus 94 for the Audi Q7 and 97 for the Volvo XC90 in Euro NCAP's Large Off-road category for 2015. Like its rivals in the category the RX scored five stars in Europe. At 79 per cent, the Lexus actually placed ahead of the Volvo and the Audi in respect of pedestrian safety, according to the European testing authority.
"The RX joins a competitive SUV market and offers a range of safety assist technologies as standard, including AEB, lane support system and reverse collision avoidance," ANCAP CEO James Goodwin was quoted saying in a press release issued yesterday.
"These new technologies can help avoid a crash in the first place and so we would urge consumers to look for a car with not only good structural performance, but with features to potentially prevent a collision.
"It's encouraging to see the Lexus achieve the highest pedestrian protection rating of 'good', scoring maximum points for the protection provided to pedestrian's legs and pelvic region.
"In the frontal offset test the passenger compartment of the RX held its shape well and all doors remained closed and there was good protection for the driver in the side impact test," Goodwin concluded.
