Appointment in Frankfurt for sporty Polo

Volkswagen will unveil three-door versions of the Polo near the end of the year -- with a sedan version in the wings

We'll see the three-door version of the Volkswagen Polo when that bodystyle premieres at the Frankfurt motor show later in the year, says Christian Haacke, the company's spokesperson for product.

Haacke was not bold enough to say for certain that the Polo with two fewer doors would also include a GTi variant or whether the seven-engine selection for the Polo includes a GTi engine.

"Let's stay patient on that subject," was his response to the first question and "Maybe" was his response to the second.

He did however say that there would be a booted Polo, as there has been in the past. Given we know that the sedan version of any small car is popular in Asia and North America, that's most likely where the four-door variant will head first. Whether it comes here too will probably depend on the success of other sedans in the light-car VFACTS segments -- vehicles such as the upcoming Ford Fiesta sedan and Honda's City, to name two.
