Audi has revealed a fuel-sipping ‘Ultra’ version of its A6, and it will be available in Australia next year.
The new A6 Ultra sedan and wagon employ a unique version of the A6 2.0 TDI’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which delivers 120kW (10kW less peak power than the standard model) and a hefty 400Nm of torque over 1750-3000rpm – up 20Nm.
But the biggest news is the large luxury sedan consumes just 4.4L/100km, making it 0.6L/100km more frugal than the regular A6 2.0 TDI and only a little thirstier than a small hybrid, while the A6 Ultra Avant consumes just 4.6L/100km.
Performance of both front-wheel drive models, which are fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission rather than a CVT as seen in other 2.0-litre A6 models, remains healthy despite the lower fuel consumption, with the sedan hitting 100km/h in a claimed 8.2 seconds and the heavier wagon doing it in 8.5 seconds.
Audi is yet to confirm whether both sedan and wagon versions of the A6 Ultra will be made available here in 2015, but we’re unlikely to see the rest of Audi’s more efficient Ultra range (A4 sedan and wagon, A5 Coupe and Sportback) because they’re manual-only models.
