Audi powers up R8 Spyder

Supercar droptop now available with powerful 449kW V10 in Audi R8 Spyder Plus guise

Audi has announced its R8 Spyder will soon be offered with the mightier 5.2-litre V10 from the R8 Plus Coupe.

Under the rear boot lid of the Spyder, that translates into an R8 convertible that comes with an additional 52kW/20Nm.

In total, that means the R8 Spyder Plus produces 449kW/560Nm.

Naturally, this has had a big impact on performance.

Against the clock, the all-wheel drive R8 Spyder Plus is now capable of a 0-100km/h sprint of just 3.3 seconds - 0.3secs quicker than the standard roadster.

Top speed, meanwhile, is 10km/h faster than the non-Plus model, with the Spyder topping out at 328km/h.

Like the R8 Plus Coupe, the faster Spyder only comes with Audi's seven-speed dual-clutch S Tronic transmission and rear-biased quattro all-wheel drive system.

How do you tell the Plus from the standard Spyder? Easy. The faster R8 drop top comes with a carbon-fibre front splitter, rear diffuser, side intake cover and subtle boot lip, the latter can colour coded if the owner wants.

Coinciding with the launch of the new R8 Spyder Plus, Audi has launched a new colour as well. Micrommatic Green, a hue that should appeal to the roadster's attention-seeking owners.

Pricing is yet to be announced for the more powerful R8 Spyder in Australia but since the R8 Coupe Plus costs an extra $35,000 over the base coupe, we expect a similar premium over the $388,500 Audi charges for the 397kW R8 Spyder.
