We’re sorry to say there won’t be another swansong Audi R8 variant, with the German car-maker’s ‘Last Lap’ teaser now confirmed to preview nothing more than a send-off video for the discontinued supercar on social media.
Audi’s US division yesterday put the call out for input on how to “film the R8 for one more adventure” via its Instagram page, urging R8 fans to cast their vote on things like cinematography.
Fans are being presented with a new aspect of the video’s production to decide on each day via the stories function on Instagram, and are given a sample of each particular method, style or technique to choose from, with the poll set to close on Saturday.
We can’t say we’re overly surprised by this revelation, given the R8 GT RWD debuted last year as the ultimate and final R8 variant, and the fact the wrapped vehicle shown in the Last Lap teasers last week was featured at Monterey Car Week last month.
The teaser’s caption certainly alluded to the emergence of another swansong R8 special, based on its shadowy imagery, camouflage-like wrap and suggestive wording including “we have something special planned”, “something big” and “ultimate send-off”.
Exactly what Audi ends up doing with its Last Lap feature remains to be seen, but at the time of writing it seems the bulk of enthusiasts are after a combination of drone, arm car and camera phone videography.
While the project is first and foremost a US initiative, local fans can still have their say to help send off one of the most iconic and recognisable supercars of all time, even if the model was pulled from the Australian market in 2021.
The original Audi R8 was launched globally in 2006, powered by the same 4.2-litre V8 as the RS 4 sedan of the day, before it inherited a detuned version of the Lamborghini Huracan’s 5.2-litre V10.
The second-generation R8 arrived in 2015, underpinned by the same Modular Sports System platform as the Huracan but without the entry-level V8 powertrain or a manual transmission.
