Audi has applied for the 'R8 Green Hell' nameplate with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, sparking rumours that a hard-core track-focused R8 is on the way.
According to
, Audi applied for the new name on March 10 and the German car-maker planned to use the Nurburgring-themed moniker for "vehicles, parts and fittings".This has led many to speculate that the current five-year-old naturally-aspirate V10-powered R8 supercar is being prepared for an outright crack at the Nurburgring production car record.
This could see the Audi coupe receive a radically redesigned aero package and see engineers turn up the wick of the 5.2-litre V10 from the 466kW and 580Nm it produces in the standard R8 Performance.
To be in for a chance at nabbing the lap record, Audi engineers will have to beat the 6:44.95 time recorded by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ back in 2018.
It's thought the final Audi R8 Green Hell will be pitched by the German car-maker as a fitting swansong for the current petrol-powered second-gen R8 that's set to be replaced by an all-new pure-electric supercar in 2023.
