Audi has released the first images and details of its third-generation A6 Allroad, derived from the Avant that debuted last May.
As is customarily the case with the Allroad, the newcomer is distinguished by a tougher stance (sitting 60mm higher than the donor vehicle) and gains plastic flared guards, roof rails, extended side sills, skid plates, a unique front grille and bumper and protection around the exhaust to signal its all-terrain orientation.
The Allroad benefits from the aluminium-intensive construction of the new A6, enabling it to undercut its predecessor by up to 70kg. Yet Audi boasts of generous interior space thanks to the wagon’s 2910mm wheelbase; luggage space measures 565 litres with all seats in place, and 1680 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Unique to the Allroad is a four-level adaptive air suspension set-up that lowers the body by 15mm at high speed and raises it by 35mm at the push of a button. There’s also a low-speed lift mode that raises the vehicle another 10mm to clear large obstacles.
A hill descent assist function for steep downhill passages is also included, limiting speed to between 10 and 20km/h, depending on the severity of the decline.
European buyers will be able to select from a trio of 3.0-litre engines – one petrol and two diesels – but only oil-burning models will be offered here when the vehicle launches locally in the third quarter of this year.
The 3.0-litre TFSI (which we won’t get) pumps out 228kW/440Nm, enabling the A6 Allroad to sprint to 100km/h in a brisk 5.9sec. Meanwhile, the 3.0-litre TDI (turbodiesel) will be offered in two states of tune, eking out 150kW/450Nm and 180kW/580Nm respectively – but it’s not yet known which of these we’ll get here.
All three engines are paired with Audi’s seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, which can be operated manually using either the gear lever or optional steering-wheel paddles.
The list of available safety kit includes radar-based adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, pre-sense safety system, active lane assist and night vision assistant with pedestrian recognition.
There’s also a park assist system with 360° display that uses four small wide-angle cameras to record images of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings and display them on the MMI monitor.
