Audi Australia has announced the all-new RS 5 Sportback will touch down in showrooms from February.
The first time Audi has developed a five-door version of the RS 5, the Sportback will arrive in Australia bearing the same price tag as the existing RS 5 Coupe: $157,700 (plus on-road costs).
Thankfully, the five-door shape won’t give away anything in terms of straight-line performance either, Audi confirming carryover 331kW and 600Nm outputs, along with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds.
As with the existing RS 5 Coupe, the Sportback employs a Porsche-sourced 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine and shuffles drive via an eight-speed automatic and the car-maker’s evergreen quattro all-wheel drive system.
The combination delivers a claimed fuel usage of 8.9L/100km, the car-maker says.
Announcing the newcomer this week, Audi Australia product planning director Shawn Ticehurst said the RS5 Sportback loomed as a nice fit for the local market.
“The very first Audi RS 5 Sportback is an outstanding concept for a contemporary performance car. It combines the incredible pace and poise you expect from the legendary RS 5, with five-door versatility for those who do not want to compromise on the classic Gran Turismo styling,” he said.
For its not-insignificant sticker price, the RS 5 Sportback will offer decent levels of standard equipment, comprising 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, gloss black exterior styling package, panoramic glass sunroof, as well as privacy glass and red-painted brake calipers.
Performance kit will also be extensive, extending to a quattro sport rear differential, RS sports exhaust system, as well as Dynamic Ride Control with adaptive dampers.
On the creature comfort front, the RS 5 Sportback packages Audi’s virtual cockpit display, Audi connect, digital radio, a Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, head-up display, wireless phone charging and the latest safety acronyms.
Like the RS 5 Coupe, the 1840kg RS 5 Sportback rides on RS-tuned five-link suspension at both ends, which is 7mm lower than the S5 Sportback.
Likewise, the five-door RS 5 differentiates itself from lesser models via a power-domed bonnet, 15mm-wider wheel housings, single-frame honeycomb grille, gloss-black headlight elements, a front spoiler with matte aluminium quattro lettering, RS-specific rear diffuser insert, RS exhaust with oval tailpipes and a fixed lip spoiler.
Otherwise, Audi Sport’s newest RS 5 is as per the A5/S5 Sportback; there’s a sizeable 480 litres of luggage space under the large liftback (expanding to 1300 with the rear seatback folded).
The RS5 is due to reach Australian showrooms in February.
