BMW Australia has climbed to fourth outright in the global M2 sales hierarchy, but stakeholders still want a bigger piece of the action.
Figures obtained by motoring.com.au reveal that Australia is now the sixth-largest M car market in the world, behind the US, UK, Germany, China and Canada.
While overall year-to-date sales for BMW Australia are down 18.5 per cent, our penchant for the Bavarian marque’s sports cars has never been stronger: Australia’s ‘M Share’ (percentage of M sales against total BMW sales) is now the highest in the world, at 6.1 per cent.
As such, BMW Australia has secured additional M2 coupes for 2017, taking its total supply to 550 vehicles for the year and pushing the local market to fourth overall.
“Demand for the BMW M2 has been strong from the outset,” said BMW Group Australia CEO Marc Werner.
“From an initial 300-unit Australia allocation, we were successful in securing 400 2016-build M2s, which were quickly snapped up.
“This presented us with a strong base to ask for further supply increases to match the sustained demand.
“As a result, we can now announce that Australia has again increased its allocation. This has ensured wait times are minimised, and dealers have immediately-available stock. If you want an M2, come and get one.”
BMW Australia is “still pushing” international stakeholders for increased stock in a bid to appease local demand. The M2 is currently the third best-selling M model in Australia, following on from a slew of accolades including the 2016 Australia’s Best Driver’s Car.
