Volkswagen has revealed a new compact sedan based on the current Polo for the Indian market.
Said to be the result of $150 million investment by the German car-maker, the new small sedan, called the Ameo, is claimed to have been developed especially for India.
Said to offer buyers best-in-class safety features, build quality and handling, the Ameo is also made locally at Volkswagen’s Chakan facility, east of Mumbai.
Initially, the small sedan will be offered with either a 55kW/110Nm 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol or a more powerful 66kW/230Nm 1.5-litre diesel with either a five-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic on the diesel.
On sale to Indian buyers in the second half of this year, pricing for the Ameo is expected to begin at just $10,500 (at today’s exchange rates).
