Chevrolet Corvette EV confirmed

All-wheel drive plug-in hybrid version also coming; both EV and PHEV could be on sale in 2023

General Motors has announced that it is readying a full battery-electric version of its Chevrolet C8 Corvette and has also teased an all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid version of the supercar.

Overnight, GM president (and former Holden boss) Mark Reuss not only confirmed the EV version but said the hybrid version of the Corvette could be on sale as early as 2023.

Releasing a statement on his LinkedIn profile, Reuss also produced a further clip that shows the hybrid playing in the snow, with the front wheels spinning off the line.

No details have been released on what powertrain the electrified Corvette will use, but it's thought the combustion engine will drive the rear wheels while an electric motor will spin up the front axle.

There's no word if the plug-in version will keep its 6.2-litre pushrod V8 or if it will harness the power of the new flat-plane-crank 5.5-litre V8 from the latest Z06.

In either case, it's thought the hybrid Corvette could offer hypercar levels of acceleration with peak power approaching 745kW.

The electric version, meanwhile, is set to carry the new E-Ray nameplate and offer even higher outputs.

Again, no information has yet been released, but it's thought the all-electric Corvette will feature two or three electric motors and mount the batteries in a stacked layout mid-ship to maintain a weight distribution for maximum agility.
