Baby Pug due in 2011

The Peugeot 107 compact car is a no show, but its replacement will be coming to Oz

Peugeot had grand plans to release the sub-compact 107 model in Australia, a vehicle that is jointly manufactured with Toyota and Citroen (badged as the Aygo and C1 respectively).

But after unprecedented demand in Europe, supply became so tight that export markets like Australia just couldn't get hold of stock, and have been on the waiting list for years now.

Peugoet Australia has been looking at getting a sub $20K compact car into its range but the reality is that the 107 will not be coming Down Under.

Peugeot Australia's general manager Ken Thomas says it's the "first time we've been denied access to a car," chiefly because it's been so successful in the EU.

However the good news is that production for the car's replacement -- the 108 -- will be beefed up significantly and according to Mr Thomas Australia will be "on the replacement [list] for 107, which is 108." The bad news is that we'll have to wait another 18 months...

Powered by petrol and diesel engines displacing not much more than 1.0-litre, the Peugeot 107 is very fuel efficient and city friendly.

If everything goes to plan, Peugeot says we can expect to see the 108 car here in 2011 at the earliest.
