Barn doors add to 2022 Toyota HiAce asking price

Extra cost announced for commercial van’s new swing-door option, as HiAce and Granvia score power lumbar adjust

Pricing has been revealed for the new barn-door versions of the 2022 Toyota HiAce, which will cost $750 more than their traditional liftback counterparts.

This move is at odds with the price parity offered by Hyundai with its 2022 Hyundai Staria Load, all van versions of which can be had with either a top-hinged tailgate or side hinged doors for the same price.

By contrast, just four HiAce barn-door variants will be offered Down Under in the coming months compared to the six liftback variants, with pricing for the range newcomers starting from $47,510.

Those on a tight budget might lament the omission of a manual version, while others may notice the lack of a Crew version.

The doors themselves initially open to 90-degrees, where they’re stopped by a soft-lock, but overriding this lock enables them to swing out to 180 degrees, but not against the bodyside as with some large vans.

The arrival of barn doors coincides with a subtle model update for both the HiAce and the related Toyota Granvia people-mover, both of which add powered lumbar support for the driver’s seat on all variants.

Toyota Granvia

Prices have predictably been tweaked by a couple of hundred dollars here and there, the most noticeable of which is a $500 price reduction for the flagship Granvia VX twins due to the revised luxury car tax threshold from July 1.

A Toyota Australia spokesperson said the upgrades reflect Toyota’s commitment to continuously improving its model range based on customer feedback.
