In recognition of the importance of the domestic Chinese market, Volvo Cars is set to release a long-wheelbase, plug-in hybrid version of the S60 at this weekend’s 2014 Beijing Auto Show.
The Volvo S60L PPHEV (Petrol Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is officially a concept but it previews the production version which the Chinese-owned Swedish marque says will go on sale in early 2015.
In factory trim, the S60L PPHEV will partner Volvo’s latest turbo-petrol four-cylinder Drive-E engine with the marque’s newest electric drivetrain. A boot-mounted (underfloor) 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack will provide around 50km range in EV mode, while the petrol and electric powertrains in combination deliver in excess of 228kW and 550Nm.
The S60L PPHEV will use the same electrification technology as the turbo-diesel Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid already on sale in selected European markets. In the S60L the petrol engine will be paired with a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Volvo claims both fuel consumption of just 2.0L/100 km and 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.5sec – although presumably not at the same time...
“This is our most technologically advanced powertrain ever. It brings us closer to our vision to offer zero-emission motoring in the future,” Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research and Development at Volvo Cars stated.
Volvo claims the S60L PPHEV can be recharged from a regular 10amp power outlet in 4.5 hours.
