Bentley showcases luxurious vision of future interior design

Self-driving luxury cars of the future won’t need seat belts and will look like a first-class lounge, says British car-maker

Bentley has released an image of what it’s titling the “Future of Luxury” to gauge feedback on a radical concept for a future autonomous replacement for the Mulsanne or Continental limousine.

The interior design does without any token nod to a driver, eliminating the steering wheel, pedals and all other controls.

Instead, the concept imagines 100 per cent of all the driving duties will be handled by the autopilot.

Interestingly, without any human error to worry about, seats belts are also absent.

Other features include screens that project high-res images on lacquered wood panels and a holograph projector for next-generation video calls.

Mixing wood, leather and even stone and offering what Bentley calls ‘protein leather’ man-made hide as an option for vegan customers, the design is said to be reminiscent of a first-class lounge or hotel suite.

Future Bentley models will also make great use of bespoke interior parts made for customers using 3D printers.

Bentley, like many other car-makers, says it plans to offer a fully autonomous driving technology on its cars by 2020, although an interior like this won’t arrive until as late as 2036, says the British car-maker.

What will arrive far sooner is the all-new replacement for the current Continental that Bentley says will be launched in 2017.

As well as new models like next year's big new sedan and the forthcoming production version of the EXP 10 Speed 6 Coupe concept, Bentley’s design team are also hard at work reimagining both the car-maker’s ‘Flying B’ grille mascot and its ‘Winged B’ badge.
