Bentley is working on a new crossover-coupe spin-off of its new Bentayga SUV, according to fresh reports.
Said to be significantly more aerodynamic, better to drive on-road and even more powerful than the Bentayga’s already mighty 447kW/900Nm 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine, the existence of the new Bentley ‘SUV super coupe’ was revealed by British car mag, Auto Express.
Created as a more luxurious and even faster alternative rival to BMW’s X6M, the Bentayga-based coupe is expected to feature phenomenal levels of performance for a large SUV, with the Bentley expected to accelerate to 100km/h is less than four seconds and top out at well over 320km/h.
On sale as early as next year, the new luxury coupe is expected to be named and revealed in March at the 2016 Geneva motor show.
Admitting another new SUV is in the works, Bentley’s product line director, Peter Guest, said the new Bentayga derivative will be “much more biased towards on-road performance”, before adding that it will have both four doors and four seats, he told Auto Express.
Guest went on to admit the new SUV “might not have as much luggage space as the Bentayga”.
Last week motoring.com.au reported that Bentley was considering an Aston Martin Vantage rival based on the EXP 10 Speed 6 show car that was unveiled at this year’s Geneva show, as well as a “shrunken Bentayga” SUV.
It’s not known if this Bentley SUV coupe is that smaller model, or if the car-maker plans to now spin-off two derivatives of the full-size SUV.
Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer has already spoken about how his company is keen to recoup the Bentayga’s costly development costs and Bentley aims to double the number of cars it sells globally.
Durheimer has also confirmed that the 6.0-litre W12 Bentayga will be soon joined by a V8 petrol, V6 hybrid and diesel.
Bentley is currently struggling with demand for the Bentayga, which arrives in Australia next year, and has ramped up the number of cars it plans to make -- from 3600 to 5500 units per year.
