BMW 3 Series models for Australia will deliver enhanced equipment from July production, with pricing changes to reflect a slightly new approach to marketing the iconic model.
Satellite navigation is now standard for all vehicles reaching local showrooms this month – effectively boosting the value of the cars by the previous option price of $2000, less the price hike of $1400 for those vehicles positioned around the Luxury Car Tax threshold, or $3000 for the 328i. The 335i rises by $2355 and the ActiveHybrid3 is $2000 more expensive to buy.
BMW is now taking 316i, 318d, 320i and 320d variants from the factory with Navigation system 'Business' as standard, and the 328i's satnav system is upgraded to 'Professional' level – previously a $1500 option. In addition, the upgraded 328i provides Internet connectivity. All lines ('Modern', 'Sport' and 'Luxury') can be ordered for the 328i at no extra cost, whereas the previously optional packages raised the price by $1500 (for 'Modern') or $2000 (for 'Sport' and 'Luxury').
The packages, which also move to no-cost options for the 335i and ActiveHybrid3 include 18-inch alloy wheels as standard. Both the six-cylinder and hybrid variants gain roller sunblinds as standard for the rear window and rear side windows.
Among the other changes, all variants ordered with the eight-speed automatic now come with launch control as standard, and those cars fitted with Navigation system Professional feature a revised iDrive controller with touch function. Previously a stand-alone option, Lane Departure warning is now only available when bundled up with the Driving Assistant option – with pedestrian and approach control warning that operates the brakes lightly at speeds up to 50km/h.
BMW has also reduced prices for a host of options. Active cruise control with stop&go is $384 cheaper and, depending on the model chosen, the Head-Up display comes down by as much as $300. Other options now priced lower are HiFi loudspeaker system/Harman Kardon surround sound system (around $460 less), and the Sport/Modern/Luxury lines ($616 less for 316i and 318d). The M Sport pack for 316i and 318d is also reduced by $615. In the case of 328i the price for the M Sport pack is now over $1000 less and $500 less for 335i and ActiveHybrid3.
"The 3 Series is lauded for its excellent driving dynamics and beautiful styling, and now it boasts increased specification and more attractive option pricing. Who could ask for more?" Managing Director of BMW Australia, Phil Horton, was quoted as saying in a press release.
According to the company, the moves are aimed at widening the prestige brand's customer base.
