BMW extends Takata airbag recall
Faulty airbags now tracked back to E39 5 Series and E53 generation of X5BMW's only previous exposure to the Takata airbag scandal was the E46 generation of 3 Series, but now the prestige importer has expanded its recall to include the 5 Series and X5 (pictured) from the same period.
The E46 was introduced to Australia at the end of 1998 and the vehicles subject to this latest recall – for a faulty airbag on the driver's side – were sold here during the period from January 2002 to December 2005. According to a list of VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) supplied by BMW, over 25,600 cars are being recalled.
From the same recall notice, a further 1372 units of the X5 and 1603 units of the E39 generation of 5 Series are similarly affected.
BMW requests owners of these vehicles get in contact with the nearest authorised servicing dealer, or phone the BMW Group Australia Customer Interaction Centre on 1800 813 299.
