BMW hatching hardcore M2 GTS
Buoyed by the huge global sales success of M2 sources say GTS version already green lit for productionA lighter, more powerful and even faster version of Australia's Best Driver's Car for 2016 is already in development.
According to German car mag, Auto Sport und Motor, BMW has begun creating a GTS or CSL version of its M2 that will come with lighter carbon-fibre body panels, a completely new aero kit that features a huge rear wing and a more powerful version of the current car's 252kW/465Nm turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder, with output tuned to around 300kW.
To cope with the extra power, larger carbon ceramic brakes will be an option while the M2 GTS will come with a wider track with lower, track-biased adjustable suspension.
Inside, it's thought the faster M2 might mimic the M4 GTS and ditch its rear seats and come with a half roll-cage in its place.
To date, BMW has limited its M2 enhancements to a performance parts range.
Auto Sport und Motor hasn't confirmed when we're likely to see the faster M2 GTS, but it's likely to be considerably more expensive than the $90,000 BMW Australia charges for the base M2 - with some speculating the GTS could be priced almost double that of the standard car.
When the M2 went on sale last April the original 300 vehicle allocation was rapidly snapped up, prompting BMW Australia to secure another 100 M2s that should arrive before the end of this year.
