BMW lifts price for M140i

Two grand dearer than the M135i it replaces, the top-shelf six-cylinder hatch is due here in Q4

BMW has announced its upgraded 1 Series range will go on sale during the final quarter of 2016, with revised four-cylinder engines for the 120i and 125i, joined by the new M140i – a successor to the M135i.

And while prices haven't shifted for the four-pot cars, the M140i is priced $2000 higher than the M135i, but remains just below $65,000 (at $64,900).

At the entry-level end of the range, the 120i offers improved engine output – up from 130 to 135kW and 250 to 270Nm – with fuel consumption reduced to 5.8L/100km. Changes to the 120i include a new engine, coded B48.

Similarly, the 125i has enjoyed a power boost, the peak figure now 165kw (versus 160kW previously). And the fuel consumption of the 125i is also better, to the tune of 5.9L/100km.

In contrast with the M135i, the M140i is now pumping out 250kW and 500Nm (gains of 10kW and 50Nm respectively), while fuel consumption has improved 0.4 litres to 7.1L/100km. A development of the M135i engine, the powerplant in the M140i is coded B58.

Standard features fitted to the 120i include a reversing camera, two-zone climate control, extended smartphone connectivity, ConnectedDrive Lifestyle with real-time traffic information, eight-speed automatic transmission (with six-speed manual a no-cost option) and 17-inch alloy wheels.

For the 125i, the equipment list adds LED fog lights, 18-inch M light alloy wheels, power fold-in mirrors with anti-dazzle function, front and rear parking sensors, variable sport steering and Alcantara/cloth upholstery.

New features offered in the M140i, over and above the M135i specification, include Comfort Access, 12-speaker harman/kardon audio and leather-trimmed seats, heated in front with electric adjustment and lumbar support.

“Since its introduction, the BMW 1 Series hatchback has always stood out within its segment,” said Marc Werner, BMW Australia CEO.

“While its combination of distinctive styling and rear-wheel drive dynamics is range-wide, the 1 Series caters to a broad spectrum of customers, from those looking for an efficient city car to enthusiasts seeking strong performance in a compact package.”

1 Series pricing:
118i – $36,900
120i – $41,900
125i – $48,900
M140i – $64,900
