BMW M president Markus Flasch says he plans to attend the 2020 Bathurst 12 Hour next February and would love to host a BMW M festival in Australia.
The BMW M Festival was held for the second time at the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit in Johannesburg over the weekend and has only been held in two other countries thus far: Canada and Japan.
Speaking exclusively to carsales at the bi-annual M celebration in South Africa, Flasch said he wants to visit Mount Panorama in particular, and plans to do so in the coming months.
The BMW M chief is yet to visit Australia but said he plans to attend the Bathurst 12 Hour international endurance race at Mount Panorama next February.
“It’s not confirmed but that’s my plan, yes,” he said.
Flasch said BMW M Festivals are local initiatives, with events planned and staged by individual market and supported by the M division.
The global BMW M boss said that while Australia ranked seventh outright for M model sales, it is the second largest market as a percentage of overall BMW sales behind Switzerland and ahead of South Africa.
“Australia is a very important market for us and what we’ve seen here [in South Africa] is very thrilling and inspiring because these are not just customers to us… it’s a community,” he said.
“Events like this with the heritage and vintage cars we bring here … I think we have a huge potential to further boost this community and I’d love to do something like this in Australia.
“We would definitely look into it,” Flasch said.
When we cheekily mentioned Bathurst would be the perfect location for a BMW M Festival, he responded “not a bad idea”.
