BMW M4 50 Jahre special-edition revealed

Limited-edition coupe celebrates 50 years of BMW M with heritage paint, exclusive hoops and interior badging

UPDATED 24/05/2022 4:20pm: BMW Australia has confirmed just 25 examples of the 2022 BMW M4 Edition 50 Jahre will arrive Down Under in the fourth quarter of this year, all of them based on the top-spec M4 Competition xDrive.

With a starting price of $201,900 plus on-road costs, the Edition 50 Jahre is $30,400 more expensive than the standard M4 Competition xDrive it’s based on, most of which can be attributed to its red M Compound Brake package, M Carbon bucket seats, M Carbon exterior pack and the M Driver's Package.

That last addition includes a raised speed limited – to 290km/h – and a complimentary BMW M Driving Experience Advance Two course to help owners get the most out of the high-performance coupe.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE PUBLISHED 24/05/2022 2:45pm: Less than a handful of days after the global debut of the rabid 2022 BMW M4 CSL, BMW has kept the momentum going by ripping the covers off the limited-run 2022 BMW M4 Edition 50 Jahre, which could become available Down Under later this year.

BMW Australia is yet to confirm the special-edition coupe for our market, but the head honchos at BMW’s global HQ have confirmed the M4 50 Jahre (German for ‘year’) has been designed specifically for sale “in Europe and other selected sales regions”, which we anticipate will include Australia given it’s one of BMW M’s strongest markets.

A special-edition BMW M3 50 Jahre sedan has also broken cover, but the four-door is being reserved exclusively for North America.

Designed and built to celebrate BMW M’s 50th anniversary, the two-door M4 50 Jahre will come in five different colours; Carbon Black, Macao Blue, Brands Hatch Grey, Imola Red and San Marino Blue – all of which have a place in the performance division’s rich history.

All examples will ride on exclusive ‘Orbit Grey Matt’ or ‘Gold Bronze Matt’ staggered (19-inch front, 20-inch rear) M forged wheels.

Things aren’t quite so dressed up within the cabin with the only unique touch being ‘Edition 50 Jahre BMW M’ lettering on the door panels, an ‘M4 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M’ centre console plaque and a matching imprint on the seat head restraints.

At this stage it seems the 50 Jahre treatment won’t be limited to one particular M4 variant, with BMW citing the availability of both the familiar six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions, as well as the option of both rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations – at least in Europe.

Translated, it means BMW will produce 50 Jahre versions of the standard M4 as well as the more potent M4 Competition variants.

Exactly which configuration we’ll get Down Under remains to be seen, with BMW confirming each selected sales region will get a “market-specific configuration with unique design features and a strictly limited number of units in each case”.

“In this way, fascinating rarities are created for the most important automotive markets around the world,” said the Bavarian car-maker.

Said allocation sizes are yet to be confirmed, although a 500-unit production run has been locked in for the corresponding M3 (North America only).

We’ll update this report with the latest from BMW Australia as soon as we hear back.
