BMW M4 CSL gets ducktail spoiler
Extreme new M car spotted in video that celebrates 50 years of BMW’s performance divisionBMW M has given us our first undisguised glimpse of the incoming 2022 BMW M4 CSL in a chest-thumping new video created to help mark the performance division's 50th anniversary.
In the video, which also features some of BMW M's past masters including the M1 Procar and original CSL racer, a yellow BMW M4 CSL cruises by at the 38-second mark.
The appearance of the rear three-quarter section of the car reveals the hard-core take on the BMW M4 coupe will revive not only the 'CSL' name last used on the 2004 E46 BMW M3 CSL, but will also come equipped with an updated version of its ducktail boot lid spoiler.
Little else in the promotional video is revealed, but last year the BMW M4 CSL was spotted at home on track at Germany's Nurburgring.
Even in heavy camouflage, the thorough overhaul of the standard M4's aero was evident, with the CSL (which might also go under the 'CS' name) getting a large front splitter, big rear diffuser and the ducktail boot lid.
It was also clear that the G82-series M4 CSL will also come with a wider track, suggesting significant suspension changes underneath.
Less easy to make out are the weight-saving measures the CSL will employ to shave the kilos off the standard BMW M4 Competition's portly 1725kg kerb weight.
Boosting performance further, it's expected the S58 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder will come with a mild power boost over the M4 Competition's 375kW and 650Nm of torque.
The jury's out on whether the most extreme M4 yet will keep the M4 Competition's eight-speed torque-converter automatic, but the towering development costs involved with reconfiguring it with a quicker dual-clutch transmission means it will probably make do with the eight-speeder.
A six-speed manual may also be offered, but it's almost certain the CSL will be rear-wheel drive only.
The star appearance of the M4 CSL in the latest BMW M video suggests its unveiling is imminent, so expect it to surface in the coming months.
