BMW Australia has released an updated BMW 2 Series Active Tourer line-up that now comprises only the 220i priced at $49,500 plus on-road costs.
Previously, while the 220i was priced at $51,600 plus ORCs, the discontinued 218i opened the BMW compact people-mover range at $45,000 and the 218d diesel was priced at $48,500.
The updated 2 Series Active Tourer range was first revealed in Europe in January following the release of a similar ‘Life Cycle Impulse’ upgrade for the 1 Series hatch and 2 Series Coupe/Convertible last September.
However, BMW Australia considered axing the controversial model, which was launched in 2014 as the German car-maker’s first people-mover and first front-wheel drive vehicle, and attracted only about 500 Australian buyers last year.
Changes for 2018 include a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, plus an updated interior with new seating and standard Dakota leather, and revised front and rear designs featuring LED headlights with hexagonal daytime running lights, LED fog lights and larger-diameter twin exhaust outlets.
Other inclusions for the standard Luxury Line grade are new 18-inch alloy wheels, Chrome Line exterior highlights, front/parking sensors, cornering lights, automatic headlights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, automatic tailgate and BMW’s latest iDrive6 infotainment system with 6.5-inch colour touch-screen, BMW Connected+ and Remote Services, real-time traffic updates and DAB+ radio.
In terms of safety, there’s low-speed autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, speed sign recognition, reversing camera and full-length side curtain airbags.
An optional M Sport Package is also available for the 220i Active Tourer, comprising a sports body kit and lowered sport suspension, sports front seats, 18-inch M alloys, M leather steering wheel, Aluminium Hexagon interior trim with Pearl Chrome accents, and BMW Individual Anthracite headlining High-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim.
Also available is the Innovations Package including head-up display, Navigation System Plus with larger 8.8-inch screen, ConnectedDrive Freedom with concierge Services and Driving Assistant Plus comprising front cross traffic warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go, Lane Keeping Assistant and Crossroads warning.
Finally, the Comfort Package option brings Comfort Access and electric front seats with lumbar adjustment, heating and memory.
There are a range of stand-alone options -- including Dynamic Damper Control, five alloy wheel designs, five interior trims and four Dakota leather options -- plus 13 exterior paint colours including new Sunset Orange and Jucaro Beige metallic colours, plus Estoril Blue for the M Sport Package.
Despite the fitment of a new seven-speed DCT, which replaces an eight-speed torque converter auto, the 220i Active Tourer’s EU6 emissions-compliant 141kW/280Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine continues to consume 5.9L/100km and accelerate the car to 100km/h in 7.4 seconds.
The five-seat, front-drive 220i Active Tourer continues to measure 4354mm long, 1800mm wide and 1555mm high, and its cargo capacity is unchanged at 468 litres, expanding to 1510 litres with the rear seats folded.
