BMW releases its most expensive SUVs ever

Bahnstorming new X5 M and X6 M priced at almost $186K and $195K respectively

BMW Australia has announced pricing for the piping-hot new X5 M and X6 M super-SUVs it revealed the Los Angeles motor show in November, ahead of their release here in May.

Priced at $185,900 plus on-road costs, BMW's hottest X5 is $2200 pricier than the model it replaces and $4000 more expensive than the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG (from $181,900), but cheaper than the upcoming Range Rover Sport SVR (from $218,500) and Porsche Cayenne Turbo $ (from $284,700).

Meantime, the new X6 M crossover-coupe will set a new price benchmark for a BMW SUV in Australia, at $194,700 plus ORCs -- $8800 more than the new X5 M and $3300 more than the model it replaces, but still less than the most expensive Rangie Rover and Porsche SUVs.

We've covered the mechanical specs of both new Bavarian performance SUVs previously, but for the record they're powered by the same 423kW/750Nm twin-turbo 4.4-litre petrol V8, matched as standard to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and launch control.

That gives the most powerful SUVs ever produced by BMW an extra 15kW and 70Nm over their predecessors – despite a 20 per cent fuel consumption reduction to 11.1L/100km – and the ability to sprint to 100km/h in a rapid 4.2 seconds, says BMW. This is despite DIN kerb weight figures of 2275kg (X5 M) and 2265kg (X6 M).

The acceleration figure is within a whisker of Porsche's benchmark-setting Cayenne Turbo S, which packs a 419kW/800Nm twin-turbo 4.8-litre petrol V8 that consumes slightly more fuel (11.5L/100km) but propels it to 100km/h in 4.1 seconds.
