BMW shows off its M2 MotoGP Safety Car

German car-maker to replace last year’s M4 with small M2 Coupe

BMW has revealed its 2016 M2 MotoGP safety car on the eve of the road car’s launch.

Sporting an all-new aero package that includes a front splitter, side skirts and a bigger rear diffuser, the M2 Coupe-based safety car is made up entirely of go-faster aftermarket options that will soon be available from BMW M Performance Parts.

Under the skin the M2 safety car also gains new coil-over suspension and a sports exhaust.

Inside, there’s an Alcantara steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and carbon-fibre trim.

Unfortunately, not all of the M2 safety car parts will be available from your local BMW dealer. The competition-spec half-roll cage, carbon ceramic brakes, huge carbon-fibre rear wing and flashing light-bar are not available on the road car.

Under the skin the M2’s 272kW/465Nm 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine is thought to remain unchanged, helping the safety car hit 100km/h in a claimed 4.5 seconds in manual form.

Already confirmed for a second quarter 2016 delivery date Down Under, BMW Group Australia has announced it will offer not one but two versions of the all-new compact M2 Coupe.

There will be a six-speed manual-only M2 Pure that will cost $89,900 (plus on-road costs), and a flagship M2 with seven-speed M DCT automatic that will command a $9000 premium at $98,900 plus ORCs.
