BMW has published a single image of a racing version of the M4 coupe that it hopes will soon do battle in the highly competitive GT4 race category.
Called the M4 GT4, the new BMW race car joins the M235i Racing and recently-launched M6 GT3 the firm already builds for its customer racing business.
Thought to carry over the road car's 317kW/550Nm 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the M4 GT4 comes with the all-carbon-fibre bonnet from the M4 GTS and competition seats, brakes and other motorsport accessories from the M6 GT3.
A new aero package, exhaust system and plenty of weight-saving carbon-fibre parts complete the transformation from road car to turn-key racer.
Racing in GT4 has gained big support in recent years because the cars that compete are all heavily production-based.
Popular GT4 racers homologated for the series are the Aston Martin Vantage GT4, Lotus Evora GT4, the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport and the Maserati GranTurismo.
BMW says its customer race teams will receive their cars late 2017, ahead of January's 2018 24 Hours of Dubai that the GT4 racers are eligible to compete in.
Pricing has yet to be announced but the M4 GT4 is expected to sell for around the same as the Cayman GT4 Clubsport racer that is priced from $US165,000 ($A220,000).
