BMW unveils X5 range-topper

BMW's all-new X5 (more here) is already becoming a familiar sight, but here's the first look at the yet-to-be-released range-topper -- the X5 4.8i M Sport.

Although mechanically unchanged from the standard X5 4.8i, the M Sport version gains a host of accoutrements to distinguish it as the big daddy of X5s.

Among the M Sport's extra goodies are 19-inch V-spoke alloy wheels, sports suspension, an "Aerodynamic body styling" kit, sports seats, matt aluminium surround on the side window frames, high-gloss ‘Shadowline' roof rails, Anthracite headlining and an M leather steering wheel.

In case this isn't bling-worthy enough for your tastes, you'll be able to plump for the optional 20-inch V-spoke alloys.

The X5 4.8i M Sport retains the donor vehicle's 4.8-litre V8, which pumps out a healthy 261kW and 475Nm. These outputs are sufficient for a claimed 0-100km/h split of 6.5sec, while top speed is quoted at 240 klicks.

BMW quotes an overall consumption figure of 12.5L/100km, but we're tipping you'd be lucky to replicate this in real-world driving conditions.

The X5 4.8i M Sport will be available in six colours: Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Carbon Black, Monaco Blue, Space Grey, Titanium Silver.

Nevada leather upholstery will be standard and offered in black, grey, beige and brown hues.

Dark Walnut interior trim is also standard on the X5 4.8i M Sport, but if this doesn't tickle your fancy you can specify Brushed Aluminium, Dark Bamboo or Light Poplar at no additional cost.

The international release of the M Sport variant comes as global sales figures reveal the new X5 is exceeding original volume expectations.

The revamped X5 was launched here in April, initially only with a choice of 3.0-litre diesel and 4.8-litre petrol power, but this month a 3.0-litre petrol variant joins the Australian line-up.
