BMW X5 pricing confirmed for Australia

BMW Australia has confirmed pricing and specification for the fifth-generation X5, which is set to reach Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2026 (October to December).

Initially, the line-up will comprise two six-cylinder variants, opening with the diesel X5 40d xDrive at $143,900 plus on-road costs, while its petrol equivalent, the X5 40 xDrive, has been priced at $145,900 plus on-road costs.

Both variants use a 3.0-litre inline-six, an eight-speed automatic transmission, rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive and pack fuel-saving 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.

Price rises are reasonably modest by industry standards for the new-generation X5, with the petrol newcomer rising just $2000 over the outgoing xDrive40i M Sport, while the new 40d sits $4000 above today’s xDrive30d but has more power and torque.

Standard equipment is generous on both new X5 launch grades and includes adaptive M suspension, an opening panoramic glass sunroof, comfort-spec front seats with heating, cooling and massage functions, soft-close doors, a heated steering wheel, automated parking and Driving Assistant Plus technology.

A major change to the X5’s interior layout sees the pillar-to-pillar Panoramic Vision display transferred from the new iX3. It’s supplemented by a 17.9-inch trapezoidal touchscreen, a separate passenger display and a standard 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins stereo.

While the previous X5 could be optioned with a third row, the 4994mm-long ‘G65’ X5 is now strictly a five-seater despite a lengthy 3035mm wheelbase. The SUV is 2000mm wide, 1751mm tall and offers 655 litres of boot space before the rear seats are folded.

BMW has partly simplified the options list. M Sport Pro costs $3600 and adds red calipers (replacing blue), M seat belts, an M steering wheel and extended black exterior trim, while the $2300 Comfort Package adds heated armrests and rear seats, four-zone climate control and sunblinds.

Other options include various paint finishes ($2000-$4000), 22-inch or 23-inch wheels (up to $5400), genuine leather in a wide variety of colours replacing faux ‘Veganza’ seat material ($8300), automatic doors ($2500), slate cabin trim ($1900) and air suspension ($7000).

Under the Neue Klasse-style skin, the new X5 uses a heavily evolved version of BMW’s existing flexible-powertrain Cluster Architecture platform. While it hasn’t moved wholesale to the brand’s feted Neue Klasse architecture, the X5 does gain the new platform’s zonal electrical architecture and digital hardware.

Price positioning remains sharp against the current Mercedes-Benz GLE, which costs around $10,000 more for an equivalent diesel six-cylinder.

While the X5 has long defined the large luxury SUV class in Australia, the competitive set in its orbit is changing rapidly.

The GLE will shortly receive a major facelift here, while Audi’s new third-generation Q7 is due in Australia in Q1 2027 with six- and eight-cylinder power. Newcomers such as the Zeekr 8X plug-in hybrid are also locked in for arrival next year, likely at a lower price point.

Plus, the expansion of the X5 range is a staggered process. A fully electric, dual-motor version badged iX5 60 with up to 845km of range will land early next year alongside a petrol six-cylinder plug-in hybrid in X5 50e form.

And a V8 is almost certain to join the range, potentially in combination with PHEV power, at a later date.
