BRZ tops 86 variants

Subaru's new BRZ sports coupe tops both the standard and GTS variants of its Toyota-badged sistership, in pure dollar terms at least.

On sale at Subaru.com.au only, from midday Monday, July 16, the BRZ kicks off at $37,150 — including on-road costs.

By way of comparison, the entry-level 86 GT is priced from $29,990 plus on-road costs, while the 86 GTS range topper is stickered at $35,490.

However the comparison is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. There are specification differences and both BRZ variants include on road costs and free scheduled servicing for three years/60,000km.

Subaru will also offer a six-speed automatic version of the BRZ priced at $39,730 driveaway.

The specification level of the BRZ places it between the 86 variants, though closer to the Toyota range topper. In comparison, the Subaru misses out on the 86 GTS's high-spec audio head unit and integrated Bluetooth.

Push button start, LED running lights and high-spec headlamps are all shared with the GTS. Trim and finishes are different, but Subaru is making more of the fact that the initial batch of BRZs will be individually numbered – adding some semblance of limited edition cachet.

"We believe that online purchase will provide transparency in supply, pricing and delivery expectations that match our high standards," Subaru Australia boss Nick Senior stated at yesterday's unveiling of the car.

“Additionally, we have appointed a BRZ coordinator who will be a dedicated point of contact for BRZ customers. Our aim is to provide an exclusive experience. Every BRZ we sell will be numbered and customers will be able to log on and receive updates on the status of their BRZ,” Senior said.

In mechanical terms the 86 and BRZ are all but identical. The FA Series 2.0-litre boxer four is unchanged from its debut in the 86 and is identically rated at 147kW and 205Nm at 7000 and 6600rpm respectively. Gearboxes and running gear are shared, though Subaru claims the BRZ's suspension tune is unique.

Minor styling changes including front valance, front quarter 'gills' and rear tweaks differentiate the Subaru from its Toyota 'twin' – but only just... Most likely to differentiate BRZ from Toyota is the traditional WRC-inspired Blue Mica paintwork that is retained exclusively by Subaru.

Inside there are unique treatments for seating, dash and the like, but again it would take an anorak to separate the BRZ and 86. Leather and heated front seats are offered as a $1500 option on the BRZ.
