BYD to ditch unique tech feature

BYD’s unique rotating touchscreen will be phased out of future models, following customer feedback that the function “wasn’t frequently used”.

When the BYD Atto 3 electric SUV arrived Down Under in 2022, it was the first model to debut the Chinese brand’s unique rotating central touchscreen, which can switch from landscape to portrait mode, at the press of a button.

The wacky touch-screen tech was then introduced on other models locally, including the Dolphin hatch, Seal sedan, Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute and Sealion 6 PHEV, in a range of sizes from 12.8-inches to 15.6-inches in newer models.

But it’s now being phased out, with future models – including the incoming Sealion 5 and Sealion 8 PHEV SUVs – set to miss out on the rotating display, based on customer feedback that it “wasn’t frequently used”, according to BYD.

“As a brand, on new development models, we are moving away from the rotating screen,” Collins told carsales.

Collins said the introduction of the tech symbolised the high-tech nature of BYD as it gained recognition with buyers Down Under.

“In reality, I think the usage of it is quite low.”

An incoming pair of battery electric vehicles – the Atto 1 and Atto 2 – due in early 2026 could be the last new vehicles BYD launches Down Under with the rotating touchscreen function.
