Cadillac's plans to debut a V6 passenger car diesel could have major implications for Australia. Announced at the Geneva motor show last week, the premium US brand will add a V6 turbodiesel to its European armoury but not until the 2009 model year (mid-2008).
The engine features new closed-loop control technology, which GM says will meet European emissions rules through to 2012. The 2.9-litre turbodiesel will feature in Caddy's Commodore-sized CTS sedan.
Designed in conjunction with Italian specialist VM Motori, like the new Captiva Diesel's four-cylinder turbodiesel, the new engine is rated at 185kW and a substantial 550Nm. Both front and rear-wheel drive versions of the powerplant have been designed, overseas reports say.
CarPoint/Carsales first suggested the engine would find its way into a Commodore based car back in November (see here). The announcement from Cadillac adds weight to the proposition. This is particularly the case given future Cadillac models are expected to use the Zeta platform that underpins the VE Commodore.
A V8 version of the turbodiesel V6 displacing around 4.5-litres is said to be under consideration for use across a range of larger vehicles including full-size US-market pick-ups such as the Chevrolet Silverado.
