Cheap 2027 Volkswagen ID.1 teased again

Fresh sketches of the 2027 Volkswagen ID.1 small hatchback have been released that reveal the upcoming BYD Dolphin rival will not feature shrunken ID.3 looks.

Instead, circa-€20,000 ($A33,000) baby EV will have a far chunkier design with some elements inspired by the Up city car and the second-generation Polo (1990-1994).

While the first teaser featured an ‘ID.One’ numberplate – fuelling speculation VW was confirming the ID.1 nameplate – some sources are now suggesting ‘ID. Every1’ is also in the mix for the affordable EV when it lands in 2027.

Commenting on the new drawings, VW chief exterior designer Andreas Mindt said: “Bold confidence meets timeless simplicity!

“With its compact yet spacious design, our new entry-level electric car blends functionality and style effortlessly.

“From the charismatic front to the smiling rear end, every detail creates a joyful connection.”

Now looking more of an evolution of the 2021 ID. Life concept, the latest concept sketches feature a one-piece glass tailgate, just like the original Up.

Featuring rectangular headlamps that incorporate 3D LED graphics, the sketches show how the lamps with be interlinked by a gloss black grille that will feature an illuminated VW emblem.

Other takeaways include wide wheel arches and large alloy wheels – although the latter will shrink considerably for the real thing.

Developed alongside the bigger Polo-sized ID.2 that will be unwrapped later this year, the ID.1 will be based on the same MEB Entry architecture and come with a 57kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that will deliver a maximum range of up to 400km.

According to VW CEO Thomas Schäfer, the new model will be both “affordable” and “high-quality”.
