BYD Australia has axed plans to introduce a more affordable version of its Sealion 7 SUV, despite overwhelming demand that saw it outsell the Tesla Model Y last month and be the only EV to feature as one of the 10 best-selling models.

Speaking with carsales at this week’s launch of the new Shark 6 Performance, BYD Australia chief product officer Sajid Hasan said the brand had no plans to offer the more affordable entry grade.
The current portfolio starts from $54,990 plus on-road costs for the 230kW rear-drive Sealion 7 Premium and tops out at $63,990 for the dual-motor Performance, both of which use an 83kWh battery pack to deliver 567km and 542km of driving range respectively.
But the less powerful and more affordable Dynamic, which was under serious consideration and due Down Under last year, is now off the table.
In China, the base model uses a 170kW/380Nm rear-mounted electric motor and smaller 71.8kWh battery pack to deliver around 414km of range (WLTP).

The decision comes amid high demand for the mid-size electric SUV, which is now the second-best-selling EV in Australia (YTD), behind the Tesla Model Y.
Last month, the Sealion 7 outsold the Model Y Down Under, shifting 1780 units compared to the Tesla’s 822.
