Citroen and DS to kill off pneumatic suspension
Cost-cutting sees the Citroen C5 sedan as the last model ever to have hydropneumatic suspensionPSA’s desperate bid to cut costs and boost profits will mean the Citroen’s trademark innovative hydropneumatic suspension will be a thing of the past according to new reports.
According to a Citroen source, PSA has killed off any future development in the suspension that combines a hydraulic pump with nitrogen-filled spheres to replace a conventional spring and damper set-up.
The news the French car-maker will retire the pneumatic suspension may also be influenced by the widespread use of electronically controlled alternatives like Volkswagen’s DCC adaptive suspension that is far cheaper to make and offers a better ride/handling compromise.
The announcement that Citroen/DS will give up on the pneumatic tech could affect other car-makers down the line - car-makers like Rolls Royce, PSA currently makes the spheres for the luxury British firm.
