The Citroën Metropolis concept car signals the French car maker's commitment to the world's largest car market. Designed in China for the domestic market, the concept will go on display at the aptly named "French Pavilion", part of the upcoming Shanghai World Fair in China, which begins on May 1 and finishes in late October.
Sketches of the new concept car have broken cover and several specifications have been revealed. For instance, the Metropolis is a long vehicle, measuring 5.3 metres from bumper to bumper, and will be driven by a high performance, low-emission plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The new design is being touted as a "sleek limousine" that "immerses itself in 'Créative Technologie', balancing environmental responsibility with luxurious comfort and driving pleasure."
The drivetrain emits just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer (less than the Toyota Prius) and the Citroën Metropolis concept can run on pure electricity, petrol, or a combination of both.
Citroën claims the 2.0-litre V6 petrol engine and electric motor combine to output 345kW/430Nm, which is equivalent to a 4.0-litre V8 engine. The combustion engine drives through a seven-speed dual clutch automated manual transmission, which transfers power to all four wheels.
The long and wide luxury limousine features Hydractive suspension to deliver "a smooth and cosseting ride experience," and the design is expected to influence future models from the French company.
With a wide body, low roof and long stance, the Metropolis concept "is a vision of creative and sophisticated luxury with an imposing stature, reflecting the dynamism and ambition of China in the 21st Century," says Citroën.
With its lift-back rear end the concept resembles an oversized luxury hatchback, not unlike the Porsche Panamera.
"With Metropolis, Citroën demonstrates that a blend of Chinese and French sensibilities can create a beautiful vision for the future," reads the Citroën press statement. The headlights feature an aggressive, sporty design, while at the rear of the car, an active spoiler and concave rear window will be highlights.
