Classic Range Rover and Defender get EV treatment

Iconic British off-roaders are next in line for elaborate but expensive battery-electric makeover

Electric vehicle conversion specialist Everrati has added the classic Range Rover and Land Rover Defender to its steadily-increasing portfolio of available makeovers.

The Range Rover and Defender’s electric rebirth will not come cheap, however, with pricing for the former starting from £230,000 ($A416,960) plus on-road costs, while the latter starts from £185,000 ($A335,426).

Neither of these prices include the donor vehicle, which will need to be supplied by the client.

Both projects are so new that Everrati is yet to confirm powertrain specifications such as power output, battery capacity or driving range, but it has promised the iconic off-roaders will retain their legendary all-terrain capabilities.

Company founder and CEO Justin Lunny said the EV conversion will ensure that current and future owners will be able to enjoy their vehicles for decades to come.

“We are extremely proud to announce our plans for the Range Rover Classic and Land Rover Defender, redefining them with our state-of-the-art 4x4 EV architecture, already proven in the Land Rover Series,” he said.

“These vehicles set new standards at launch – we will do the same again with our advanced technology, as we transform these icons, enabling them to live on in the age of electrification.”

The Everrati conversion process is largely the same regardless of which model it is, but the Range Rover Classic and Land Rover Defender’s EV transition includes a full restoration comprising classically styled EV-specific dials and rich leather upholstery, plus a bespoke EV battery, transmission, three-phase motor and regenerative braking system.

Every conversion is reversable should an owner fancy a return to internal combustion.

Other models eligible for EV conversion by the UK-based company include various classic Porsche 911s, the Series II Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda and Superformance GT40 replicas.
