Closer look: Maserati GranTurismo Folgore EV hits the road

Less than a month after our spy photographers snapped a disguised prototype undergoing winter testing in the Arctic Circle, a pre-production Maserati GranTurismo Folgore has taken to the streets of Rome in celebration of the local Formula E-Prix.

Free from camouflage but still wrapped in a detail-blurring blue colourway, the pre-production car was driven to the city’s dedicated Formula E circuit by none other than Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, providing the world with its best look yet at the Italian brand’s next-generation all-electric grand tourer.

As revealed by the previous spy images, the GranTurismo has retained its sizeable dimensions with an expansive wheelbase, long bonnet and swooping roofline, but the exact proportions have now been put in focus by these latest images.

For reference, the last-generation GranTurismo had a longer wheelbase than a Range Rover.

Unfortunately for eager fans, the new images ultimately serve to reaffirm what we’d already ascertained from the spy images: the new GranTurismo will bring classic coupe lines but with a more relaxed styling demeanour and old GranSport-inspired lights.

It’s worth noting too that the blue pre-production car was fitted with the same tri-spoke alloy wheel design as seen previously on the disguised prototype.

The yet-to-be revealed GranTurismo coupe will be joined in showrooms next year by a new-generation Maserati GranCabrio convertible, which is also set to adopt an all-electric powertrain, making both models the first in their segment to be offered as dedicated electric vehicles.
