The Kiwis have had diesel versions of Suzuki's Grand Vitara for years, but Australia has not been so blessed.
That has changed though, following the local launch of a new Grand Vitara variant with a 1.9-litre common-rail turbodiesel.
The new engine is an intercooled four-cylinder unit developing 95kW of power at 3750rpm and 300Nm of torque from 2000rpm. Suzuki claims that the Grand Vitara turbodiesel is not only the most powerful variant in the range, but also the most economical, returning a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 7.6L/100km.
A typically undersquare engine (80x90mm bore and stroke), the powerplant features variable vane geometry turbocharging and a diesel particulate filter. With the latter fitted, the engine complies with the Euro IV emissions standard. As for other Grand Vitara variants, the new engine drives through a five-speed manual transmission and dual-range transfer system.
The new variant has been on the cards for a while, with Suzuki touching on the compression-ignition model at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney last year.
Acknowledging this, Suzuki Australia's General Manager, Tony Devers said: "Customers have been telling us for some time they would welcome the option of a turbo-diesel engine."
"Grand Vitara remains one of the very few compact SUVs that offer a dual range transmission offering true off-road ability, as well as excellent approach and departure angles."
Priced at $34,990, the Grand Vitara turbodiesel will feature standard ESP with traction control, six airbags and ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist.
Convenience features include cruise control, MP3-compatible CD audio system, climate control and electric windows and mirrors.
Dealers will start delivering the new model from February 1.
