It's not news, is it? All of this 'Corolla beats Commodore' for sales one month, followed by a reversal the next.
August was a little different. Without obvious reason, Corolla snuck up on Commodore and was barely 200 units behind the large Holden, according to industry statistician, VFACTS.
The Toyota posted a sales result of 4673 units versus 4899 for the Commodore. In respect of market share, the Commodore's result was quite close to the August 2006 result, which was the first month on sale for the VE model. In other words, the Commodore did well with a strong result, 12 months on from the launch; albeit in a record sales month for August.
As against that though, the Corolla's result is a full 500-unit improvement on the August 2006 result. That of course compares sales of the new 150 Series Corolla with the previous 120 Series car that was on sale this time last year.
The Toyota's performance is starting to look more and more like a sales tsunami and the one way that Commodore can forestall losing the top-seller crown over a twelve month period would be through the introduction of a wagon. That would give the Holden some incremental breathing space.
Just to make life harder for Holden, Ford can be expected to snaffle a larger share of the large car segment when the Project Orion Falcon is launched early next year.
Commodore's year-to-date sales are over 8000 units ahead of the Corolla, so Toyota is unlikely to lift the crown this year, but a good strong start in January '08 could put the Corolla in the box seat for next year.
