Corvette Z06 performance revealed
Hottest C7 Corvette to date sprints to 60mph in less than three secondsIt was revealed at the Detroit motor show in January and now General Motors has revealed US pricing and performance figures for Chevrolet's seventh-generation Corvette Z06 Coupe.
The fiercest version of Chevy's latest C7 Corvette, Stingray coupe and convertible versions of which were revealed last year, is claimed to sprint to 60mph (96km/h) in 2.95 seconds, all but matching the Ferrari 458 Speciale (0-60mph in a claimed 2.9 seconds).
GM says the Z06, which is now on sale in the US, can also complete the quarter-mile (402m) dash in 10.95 seconds, with a terminal speed of no less than 204km/h.
While those figures are for the optional eight-speed paddle-shift automatic version fitted with a Z07 performance package, the standard seven-speed manual variant with Z07 performance pack is claimed to hit 60mph in 3.2 seconds on its way to an 11.2-second quarter-mile time.
GM says the new Corvette Z06 is the fastest production car it has tested at the company’s 4.7km Milford Road Course, eclipsing the top-shelf ZR1 version of the previous C6 Corvette – a replacement for which is yet to emerge – by a full second.
The new Z06 Corvette cranks out 466kW/861Nm from its supercharged 6.2-litre LT4 V8, out-powering the 335kW/610Nm V8 in the Corvette Stingray.
Standard features include Magnetic Ride Control and Performance Traction Management, and customers can pay extra for an industry-first Performance Data Recorder.
The Z06's optional Z07 performance pack comprises an aggressive aero package, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, which stop the car from 60mph in a claimed 30.4 metres.
GM says that gives the Z06 the best braking performance of any production car it has ever tested, and claims the car achieves 1.2g in lateral acceleration – up from the Corvette’s previous best 1.13g.
“The Corvette has long been known as America’s sports car,” said the executive vice-president of GM Global Product Development, Mark Reuss. “With the capability of the new Z06 rivaling the best performance cars in the world, we will also be America’s Supercar.”
Performance figures are yet to be revealed for the Z06 convertible.
In North America, where first deliveries will take place early next year, the Z06 Corvette Coupe is priced at $US78,995 (A$90,500), while the convertible costs $US83,995 ($A96,000) – plus sales and other state taxes.
Of course, that makes it considerably cheaper than the Ferrari 458 Speciale, which costs $US288,000 (A$330,000) in the US.
Sadly, no C7 Corvettes will be built in right-hand drive for export markets, but local converters including Queensland's Performax International are already working on right-hook versions for Australian customers.
