Cut-price homegrown Hyundai i20 N spotted

One-off first-generation Hyundai i20 spotted in Victoria doing a very good N impression

Can’t afford a brand-new 2024 Hyundai i20 N or can’t be bothered waiting the minimum six-month delivery time? Well don’t stress because there could be a readily available new cut-price homegrown alternative available.

These images of a very convincing first-generation Hyundai i20 three-door hatch wearing a barrage of bespoke N paraphernalia were snapped and published over the weekend by a member of the Hyundai i20 N Owners Club Australia Facebook group, showcasing a hilarious level of ingenuity and resourcefulness.

Spotted on Victorian roads, the white wannabe hot hatch is fitted with the signature N red exterior trim, dual exhaust outlets, rear diffuser, N-badged side-skirts, a fixed roof spoiler, lowered suspension, black alloy wheels and a genuine N badge under the factory i20 typography.

It isn’t known if the homegrown i20 N features any engine modifications to back up its angry exterior, but forum chatter has suggested there’s at least one first-gen i20 getting around with some sort of turbocharged engine swap.

Odds are that such a mill would be sourced from an i30 SR or first-gen Veloster Turbo and could be good for at least 150kW/265Nm depending on modification levels – more than enough to worry an unsuspecting BC3 i20 N…

The truly impressive thing for us, however, is the sheer attention to detail of the i20 pictured here – the red trim, black wheels, contrasting black bumper and side skirts are all accurate and bear a clear resemblance to the hardware fitted to a genuine i20 N, all the way down to the shape of the side skirts and location of the N badge.

We can only guess at the modifications lurking under the skin, but we find ourselves hoping the unique little street car is riding on coil-over suspension to help it truly live up to its hot i20 N aspirations.
