CVT on the way for Subaru's Outback diesel
Importer anticipates heavy demand for automatic diesel variantSubaru will introduce a 2013 model year Outback in March – complete with the option of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the diesel-engined variants in the range.
It's good news for Subaru buyers, but long-awaited; the CVT option for diesel Outback variants was first reported by motoring.com.au back in May of last year.
Subaru MD Nick Senior explained in a press release issued today that the availability of diesel CVT variants is expected to have a marked effect on the percentage of Outback sales that are diesels – currently one in five.
“Diesel manual Outback now represents around 20 per cent of the model’s sales, so we’re anticipating significant demand for the auto," Mr Senior was quoted saying.
“Our best advice is for customers to see their dealer as soon as possible, because if our experience with the manual is anything to go by, we’ll end up with a very strong order bank for this car.”
Both the Outback and the smaller Forester powered by the 2.0-litre diesel boxer have proved popular in rural areas, where range is a major purchasing consideration. This is where the importer expects the highest rate of take-up to occur for the diesel/CVT combination in the Outback. Subaru will offer the CVT in the entry-level 2.0D variant and a Premium model.
2013 model year updates will also include revised grille, front bumper, fog light bezels and wheel styles. Subaru will announce full specifications and pricing in March.
