Teaser videos of the next generation Nissan Pathfinder have broken cover ahead of the vehicle's official unveiling at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show next week.
The two videos show the SUV 'concept' from the front and rear, revealing a contemporary new design that has the potential to lift the vehicle's profile, both in America when it launches in the second half of 2012, and also in Australia down the track.
Wholesale styling changes will be mirrored in the vehicle's all-new platform, which eschews the previous ladder on frame chassis for a monocoque setup. This approach was taken in order to improve the Pathfinder's ride and handling qualities.
Nissan Australia's Head of Corporate Communications, Jeff Fisher, told motoring.com.au the all-new Pathfinder will be coming to Australia, but wouldn't elaborate on the timing.
"We'll see the production preview in Detroit soon and it'll be on sale in the US in the second half of 2012," said Fisher, who conceded that it wouldn't be available in Australia in 2012. However the Pathfinder is expected to be on sale locally before the new Nissan Patrol.
Details of the new model are a closely guarded secret and it's unclear what sorts of engine arrangements the vehicle will offer. An iteration of Nissan's 3.5-litre V6 petrol is a given and diesel variants are likely, but Fisher cautioned "It depends on what the Americans do with it."
According to Nissan USA's media statement, the vehicle will be a seven seat proposition that "...takes all of Pathfinder's traditional SUV hallmarks and wraps them in a new platform and dramatic new aerodynamic design."
New Pathfinder models will retain some semblance of ruggedness with four-wheel drive setups while "thoughtful technology" will also be incorporated.
The new seven-seat SUV will rival vehicles such as the Ford Territory, Mazda CX-9, Toyota Prado, Mitsubishi Pajero and Subaru Tribeca.
