DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: 2018 Hyundai Veloster previewed

New interior details emerge for next-generation Korean hatch

Hyundai has given us another sneak peek of what its upcoming Veloster will look like, both inside and out.

Previewed by a series of digital sketches ahead of its official reveal at next week’s Detroit motor show, the sporty hatch looks set to debut a new driver-centric interior layout, headlined by minimalist controls and switchgear and an obvious partition between driver and passenger.

A flat bottomed steering wheel is another distinct nod to the car’s sporty pedigree, while outside, the updated Veloster employs a sharp angular design not that far removed from the outgoing car – at least going off the cryptic sillouette renderings released by the car maker. Chief among the similarties: a centrally-mounted dual exahaust outlet.

The bigger question is what will be fitted under the bonnet, and specifically, around Hyundai’s plans to adapt the 202kW/353Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine fitted to the upcoming i30N hot hatch.

It is also speculated Hyundai will offer a naturally-aspirated base model and a higher-powered Turbo version using the same 150kW 1.6-litre engine as the i30 SR.

Hyundai is confirming nothing at this stage, but is expected to reveal all, including Australian timings, at the Detroit reveal next week.
