Mercedes-Benz will unveil two hybrid variants of the W212 E-Class at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.
The E 300 Bluetec Hybrid is powered by a diesel engine and is known to be pencilled in for launch in Australia during the latter half of 2012. According to the manufacturer, this vehicle will provide 150kW and 500Nm output stats, for an NEDC combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of just 4.2L/100km. Adding to the car's appeal, it will be available in sedan and wagon forms, although it's not known whether the wagon will reach the local market.
Aimed at diesel-shy markets such as the USA, the E 400 Hybrid features a petrol engine instead of the diesel, and is good for fuel economy of 27mpg (8.7L/100km), in accordance with American CAFE standards. Benz rates the petrol V6 at 225kW and 370Nm. At first blush the E 400 Hybrid looks at a disadvantage against BMW's ActiveHybrid 5, but the fuel consumption figure of no more than 7.0L/100km for the BMW is believed to be an NEDC figure — and not directly comparable to the E 400's CAFE figure. The BMW may have the drop on the Benz by virtue of its added performance.
Both the Benz hybrids rely on lithium-ion battery technology to store electrical power for the electric motor, which develops 20kW of power and 250Nm of torque. Other fuel-saving features and modes include auto-stop/start, regenerative braking, boost effect, electric-only mode and 'sailing'.
The message from the right-hook countries seems to have been received loud and clear in Stuttgart, with the press release for the two hybrid-drive variants confirming both will be built in RHD configuration as well as LHD. Benz hasn't let the cat out of the bag where the drivetrain design is concerned, other than describing the setup in its press release as "flexible and modular hybrid" system.
"With these two E-Class models we are now continuing our comprehensive hybrid offensive. The modular technology opens up a quick way for us to complement other model series with hybrid models", explains Professor Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler Board Member for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
"With a clear focus on the different requirements of global markets, we are able to offer precisely the models which our customers want. The E-Class hybrids provide a clear reduction in consumption as well as a very impressive driving experience: they represent hybrid motoring at the premium level."
