DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: CLA Shooting Brake preview
Wagon range based on Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan confirmed for local launch in third quarterMercedes-Benz has invited Australian journalists to join a select number from around the world for a preview of the new CLA Shooting Brake in Detroit.
Ironically, American journalists haven't been invited, simply because the CLA wagon won't be sold in North America – but it will be sold here.
With the CLA Shooting Brake still six months or more away from local launch the final specifications and pricing are not set in concrete, but the global range will comprise two diesels and four petrol variants, not including the range-topping CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake. In other parts of the world, but not necessarily Australia, the range kicks off with the CLA 180, with other petrol variants comprising CLA 200, 250 and 250 4MATIC. The diesels are the CLA 200 CDI and CLA 220 CDI.
Powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder, the CLA 180/200 petrol models develop 90kW/200Nm and 115kW/250Nm respectively. Fuel consumption will vary between 5.3 and 5.6L/100km for dual-clutch models powered by the 1.6-litre engine, irrespective of output.
The CLA 250 variants feature a 2.0-litre petrol engine rated at 155kW/350Nm and the fuel use according to the NEDC combined-cycle test ranges from 5.5 to 5.7L/100km for the front-wheel drive variant, or from 6.6 to 6.8L/100km for the all-wheel drive 4MATIC model, depending on precise specification.
Peak power and torque figures for the diesels are 100kW/300Nm (CLA 200 CDI) and 130kW/350Nm (CLA 220 CDI) with both variants displacing the same capacity – 2.1 litres – from their four-cylinder engines. Fuel use ranges from 3.9 to 4.2L/100km for the CLA 200 CDI, and around 4.3L/100km for the CLA 220 CDI.
Capping the range is the CLA 45 AMG variant, producing 265kW and 450Nm. Official fuel consumption is 6.9L/100km. The hot-shoe version is said to be good for a 4.7-second time to cover the run from a standing start to 100km/h.
The official global launch of the CLA Shooting Brake is scheduled for early March in Geneva.
