Jeep has abandoned constantly variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) and adopted an orthodox six-speed auto as the automatic choice in its compact Compass SUV line-up.
Unveiled on the eve of the Detroit motor show, the 2014 Compass also adds standard seat-mounted front-side airbags, minor design upgrades inside and out and the option of a reversing camera.
It is expected go on sale in Australia in the third quarter of 2013.
The same transmission should also flow into the Compass’ non-identical technical twin, the Patriot, although no announcement was made in Detroit.
The PowerTech 6F24 fully electronic transmission mates to both the 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engines offered with the Compass Sport and Limited. However, a five-speed manual remains standard equipment.
Interestingly, PowerTech is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai, which already supplies the 6F24 for use in the Chrysler Group’s Dodge Dart.
As yet Jeep is making no specific claims for fuel economy or performance gains, but says the new transmission is designed to achieve both.
Exterior Compass styling changes include plated upper grille trim and black halogen headlight bezels. Inside there are fresh interior trims.
